Haydn with friends: Uwe and Christopher are a Naxos dreamteam, their Ries Concertos series being one of the label's many great successes. Christopher and I have known each other since 1989, and when he came to New Zealand in 2009, we played the F Major trio in a concert and decided we wanted to record them. I could persuade the Mozarthaus Vienna to become our partner in crime, and we performed the trios there on one evening and recorded them on the following two days. When Uwe arrived in Vienna two days before the concert, there was a slight moment of panic when he discovered that one of the keys of his flute did not work properly, which could have jeopardized our tight timeframe had it not been for the Wiener Flötenwerkstatt who quickly solved the problem ...
